James Helm is the founder of TopDog Law Personal Injury Lawyers. James grew up playing sports 24/7. Whether it was football, wrestling, or baseball – James has always loved to compete. He’s taken that same competitive nature and applied it to the courtroom fighting for his clients and building TopDog Law Personal Injury Lawyers from the ground up into the powerhouse law firm it is today.
One thing many people admire about James is that he is a straight shooter. He keeps it real with his clients and isn’t afraid to share his own story of struggle.
James tore both shoulders wrestling in high school. Following his first procedure, he was introduced to prescription painkillers and became addicted. From 17-25, James battled with drug addiction.
Finally, in 2016, after years fighting in silence, James went to treatment and has been sober ever since. James often says that the opportunity to press the restart button on his life was the greatest gift he’s ever received. By God’s grace, he was able to change his life and is now determined to help other people overcome their struggles and change their lives too.
Given James’ battle with addiction, he did not have an easy time getting into law school. He was the last person admitted to Rutgers Law School. James will tell you that he got the call to start law school after orientation and only when another student dropped out. He quickly jumped on the opportunity and excelled. James graduated near the top of his class from Rutgers Law School and from Rutgers School of Business.
During law school, James had the opportunity to intern for Judge L. Felipe Restrepo at the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Among other tasks for Judge Restrepo, James became very involved with the STAR program helping people who were recently released from federal prison. This experience, along with his life experience dealing with addiction, led James to decline a fancy corporate law firm job and instead decide to help individuals who he felt like he could impact most.
