A traumatic brain injury may occur when a sudden jolt or blow to the head disrupts the brain’s normal functioning. TBI diagnoses range from mild concussions to severe brain damage, with symptoms that may affect every aspect of a person’s life. 

However, understanding TBIs requires moving past traditional labels like “mild,” “moderate,” or “severe.” These terms only describe the initial, short-term assessment of symptoms, not the long-term prognosis or potential impact.

Even so-called “mild” TBIs can lead to prolonged or worsening symptoms, while some patients with “severe” TBIs can recover fully. These classifications can underplay the serious, unpredictable nature of TBIs, which remain invisible on MRIs or CT scans for the most part.
