Your Guide to Rideshare Accident in Baltimore

The Reality of Rideshare Accidents in Baltimore

Rideshare accidents have become increasingly common as more people rely on services like Uber and Lyft for transportation. From the busy Inner Harbor area to the popular Fells Point district, or from a BWI Airport pick-up to a late-night drop-off in the Canton neighborhood, Uber and Lyft vehicles are always on the move. With so many rideshare cars on the road, rideshare accidents are becoming more common. According to a University of Chicago study, one-third of ride-share drivers surveyed reported being involved in a crash while working. The study, recently published in the Journal of Safety Research, is the first the authors know of to quantify the frequency of crashes among ride-share drivers, according to the study’s lead author.    The study looked at survey responses from 277 ride-share drivers who self-reported their history of crashes and their driving behaviors.  While all drivers are at higher risk of a crash when driving while distracted or tired, ride-share drivers are uniquely susceptible to these conditions, the researchers said. They use their cellphones to get information about new passengers, for example, and they are often driving as a second job, which makes them more likely to be tired on the road.

Understanding Uber and Lyft’s Insurance Policies in Baltimore

Rideshare accident cases are often more complex than regular car accidents due to the involvement of multiple parties. You’re not just dealing with the other driver but potentially the rideshare company’s insurance policy as well. Uber and Lyft both provide insurance for their drivers under certain conditions, but knowing which policy applies and how to access those benefits can be confusing.  Here’s how it generally works:

Offline or Off-App

If the driver isn’t logged into the rideshare app, only their personal insurance applies. Uber or Lyft won’t cover any damages in this scenario.

Logged In, No Ride Accepted

When a driver is logged in but hasn’t accepted a ride, Uber and Lyft provide limited coverage, including:

  • up to $50,000 per person for bodily injury
  • $100,000 per accident for bodily injury
  • $25,000 for property damage.

En Route to Pick-Up or During a Trip

If a driver is on their way to pick up a passenger or actively transporting a rider, Uber and Lyft offer their most extensive coverage, with up to $1 million in third-party liability coverage. This typically covers medical expenses, lost income, and other damages caused by the accident. Additionally, they provide uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, which can be critical if the other driver is uninsured.

Uber and Lyft companies may not automatically provide coverage without a strong claim. Working with a lawyer experienced in rideshare accidents can help ensure that you get access to the maximum coverage available.
