A fatal car accident took place late Monday night just before 11 p.m. in North Philadelphia.

One person is dead and two others hospitalized after an SUV crashed into a utility pole on Macalester Street, then crashed into the fence that surrounds the Philadelphia Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit building.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. An 18-year-old was thrown from the front seat, and a 21-year-old had to be cut out of the back seat. Chief Inspector Scott Small says it appears no other vehicles were involved.

“We don’t know if anything happened before the accident that caused this vehicle to lose control, but there’s only one vehicle on the scene,” Small said.

Authorities will be reviewing security video for clues to what might have caused the accident.
