Types of abuse or neglect that commonly occur in nursing home settings include:

• Physical Abuse

This includes hitting, slapping, pushing, unnecessary restraints, or rough handling. Visible bruises, cuts, or broken bones can be red flags, especially when caregivers can’t provide a consistent explanation.

• Emotional or Psychological Abuse

Verbal insults, threats, humiliation, or isolation can severely affect a resident’s emotional well-being. Signs may include sudden withdrawal, fearfulness around certain staff members, or unexplained mood changes.

• Sexual Abuse

• Neglect

Neglect involves failing to provide basic needs like food, water, hygiene, medical care, and protection. Bedsores, malnutrition, dehydration, and poor personal hygiene are common indicators.

• Financial Exploitation

Nursing home staff or others may exploit residents by stealing money, altering wills, or misusing credit cards or personal property. Unexplained withdrawals or changes to financial documents should be taken seriously.
